Pros and cons of employing a three phase generator for single phase loads



The usage of three phase generators to power a single phase load has many advantages and disadvantages and requires exploring various features and specifications. The application of three phase generators for single phase loads has many recommendations and one needs to perform accurate degree of mechanical and mathematical measurements to obtain effective results in this regard. If any form of inaccurate or incorrect measurement is performed in this regard, then it may lead to serious explosions and damages and ultimately may end up causing serious damage to the generator. Mathematics involved in the working of the generators:  The labels or the banners situated on the outer surface of the generators specify the amount of power supported by the generators. For example the label stands to be like 225 volt, 3 phase, 30 Kw generator. Now in order to obtain the single phase rating one needs to subtract 1/3 of the Kw that is designated on the nameplate. This will give you the idea of the total single phase rating of the generator and thus one can use them accordingly.

One cannot afford to buy a labeled three phase generator as a giant power source. The 3 phase machines are dedicated and are relatively easy to build and install. There are many dangers associated with the ratings of the generators. In case one requires power energy beyond a particular specification one needs to have optimum performance of the machines beyond that specification. The main aspect is that in order to produce single phase power a particular percentage of the total windings are used which suffices the work for the whole system. This leads to a major drawback as the generators can fail suddenly. The heat that is generated accumulates in the windings as they are forced to resist more than the specified range of ampere that they can support and thus leads to premature failure of the generators. 

The diesel engines faces or offer no real danger while operating at single phases. There is a specific range of the capacity of the diesel Perking Generators. If the capacity is lowered below a certain load then it may lead to the eruption of a critical condition. The adverse effect of such a phenomenon causes loss of the output capabilities of the machine, burning of the oil or leakage of the oil in and around exhaust components. To overcome this condition one may employ a load bank or increase the capacity of the load of the generators.
